Writing for Mitchell tends to develop from experience which is based on observation. Studying the human condition. Even Change focuses on the experiences Mitchell encounters either in day-to-day life or as he reads or hears about them. Music influences his writing and having played drums in Lungfish cannot be discounted. The vistas that traveling and preforming opened clearly have helped Mitchell in documenting that which he has encountered. The camaraderie and support of the poets, writers, artists, musicians, and friends he has met and known in Baltimore and beyond, as well as his families' roots and support in Philadelphia also have laid a groundwork, a foundation for much of what appears in Even Change.
